After a shaky first half, the Matilda Torres Toros football team pulled away from the Sanger West Hornets for a 34-0 North Yosemite League victory.
Armani Sua led the Toros with three touchdowns. Joseph Bass and Jose Soriano also scored touchdowns in Friday’s win in Tom Flores Stadium in Sanger.
The Toros gained almost 300 yards of total offense and held the Hornets to 167.
However, it was a grinding first half that saw the Toros sweating a little. Sanger West gained 158 yards of offense in the first half while the Toros gained 170. The Hornets held the Toros to just seven points in the first half.
The Toros made some adjustments and played most of the game in Hornets’ territory. They outgained Sanger West 127-9 in the second half.
The Toros opened the game with a 59-yard drive to inside Sanger West territory, but fumbled and the Hornets recovered.
The Hornets responded with a drive inside Torres’ 20-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs.
The Toros went on a 10-play, 80-yard drive that Bass finished with a two-yard touchdown run for the only score of the first half.
Both teams traded interceptions and punts in the remainder of the second quarter.
Sanger West got the ball at its own 20 and lost a yard to open the second half. The Hornets’ punt went off the side of the foot and the ball reached the line of scrimmage before it was downed.
Two plays later, Sua scored on a 14-yard run for a 13-0 lead.
Sanger West was picked off on third down. The Toros moved the ball into the red zone, but turned it over on downs.
The Hornets lost six more yards on their next drive and got off an 11-yard punt.
It took the Toros five plays to add to their lead with a 10-yard touchdown run by Sua for a 20-0 lead.
The Hornets gained 13 yards on their next possession before turning the ball over on downs. Sua finished a three-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run for a 27-0 lead.
The Hornets got its only first down of the second half on the next drive, but had to punt.
Torres finished its lone drive that began in its own territory with a seven-play, 63-yard drive that quarterback Soriano finished with a 10-yard run for the 34-0 win.
The Toros host Hoover at Madera South to continue NYL play.
