If you judge by all the television commercials and magazine ads, one would get the idea that Valentine’s Day is exclusive to romantic lovers. But I remember the old days, when schoolkids were encouraged to create artistic greeting cards, usually made from colorful construction paper, glitter and perhaps some paper doilies.
Also, it was fun to buy the boxes of valentines that usually featured popular cartoon or super hero characters of the time. I didn’t always appreciate having to give valentines to every classmate, but I understood the reasons for the rule.
I suspect there is much more money to be made by selling diamond jewelry, fresh flower bouquets, boxes of fine chocolates, exotic perfumes, etc., than silly paper valentines for kids. I have seen some commercials that suggest buying a new car as a token of love.
