My dad loved pie, and actually made one type out of Concord grapes. I almost hate to mention what he called it, but you know me — I will say it anyway: slipgut pie.
The name originated from the fact that you squeezed each grape with your fingers and the insides would pop out into a bowl or measuring cup.
Other pies made in our household included lemon meringue, apple, apricot, peach, blackberry, rhubarb, pecan, pumpkin and mincemeat. As for myself, I have three rhubarb plants that keep me supplied with plenty of “pie plant” filling, but about half the time I just make the filling on top of the stove and forget about making a crust.
