Well, it is an election year, and whenever I watch TV now, until the first Tuesday in November, I know I have to hear politicians’ bad mouth their opponents. It is disgusting.
I remember times when those running for an office were respectful of their opponents. Rather than focusing on the flaws of opponents, the campaigners had plans for the future. Those days are gone. Now, maybe they don’t have a plan at all. They’re just campaigning against someone.
TV ads used to be called commercials. I still call them commercials, although I guess that is a somewhat archaic term now. Most call them advertisements, or just ads.
I miss the days of the old commercials. They were entertaining and easy to remember. Some were funny, some were cute, some had cartoon characters in them, and some had jingles that would get stuck in your mind, like an ear worm.
So, until the first Tuesday in November, I am now stuck with campaign ads or prescription drug ads that have 30 seconds worth of disclaimers. The next entertaining ads will be on Superbowl Sunday in February.
Some of the old commercials I remember as a child were ads for products that no longer exist, like Duz or Cheer detergents, or Fizzies. Some products are still around, but I no longer see their commercials.
Here’s one. “You’ll wonder where the yellow went, when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent.” I guess that jingle went away with the current teeth whiteners we have today.
There was a set of twin girls who were teenagers riding a bicycle-built-for two singing, “Double your pleasure, double your fun, with Doublemint, Doublemint, Doublemint Gum.” This advertised Wrigley’s Doublemint Gum, which was a very popular gum of the past, along with Juicy Fruit and other gums.
One of my all-time favorite commercials was the one for Peanut M & Ms. It was a black and white commercial with two cartoon peanuts sitting by a swimming pool of melted chocolate. They would each climb onto the ladder by the pool and dive into the chocolate, coming up with the coating of chocolate.
I remember chanting what they said when they emerged from the pool, and my dad getting sick and tired of hearing that commercial over and over again as I repeated it. “I’m a choice M&M peanut, fresh roasted to a golden tan, drenched in creamy milk chocolate, covered with a thin candy shell.
I loved that commercial!! To this day, I can recite it word for word.
Pamper Shampoo was a product I remember from when I was a small child. Most people do not remember it. It was also a cartoon. The characters were lambs, and the jingle (with tune) was, “Pamper, pamper, new shampoo. Gentle as a lamb, yes ma’am! Pamper, pamper, new shampoo.”
When you see me around town sometime, ask me to sing it to you.
Have a great weekend!

Nancy
