The recent storm that laid down more than an inch of rain came at a pretty good time for Madera County farmers.
According to Creekside Farming President Jay Mahil, most of the crops have been already harvested and those that aren’t, benefitted from the storm.
“We will take it when we can get it,” he said. “There are still some crops on the field, but it’s very little. There is still the tail end of almond harvest. Walnuts are still left. We haven’t started our walnut harvest. Walnuts like a little rain. It helps break them out of their outer hull. We still send the walnuts to a dryer, so if they are wet, it doesn’t hurt them. With almonds, we have to be within a certain moisture percentage to be processed. The rain is a little detrimental to almonds. There’s a little bit of table grapes out there.”
