FOWLER — Coming off its first loss of the season, the Madera Coyotes baseball team took a little time to find its footing, but did enough for a 6-3 victory over host Fowler to win the Central Valley Diamond Classic.
Joel Arellano allowed one run over six innings. Mark Huarte had three hits and drove in three runs to lift the Coyotes to the championship, a night after losing their first game of the year. The championship games was postponed for a couple of weeks because of rain.
“Yesterday wasn’t much fun, but, honestly, I think our team needed that,” head coach Andy Underwood said. “I think they were too lax at the plate. They were trying to get too big. They almost had the approach that the wins were going to handed to them. It was a good thing that happened yesterday. I think we would have been in a bad situation tonight if we had pulled out last night’s game, just as a mental part of the game.”
