911 call leads to DUI arrest

A concerned motorist’s call may have prevented a tragedy.

A motorist called 911 to report a silver Toyota Tacoma driving recklessly northbound on State Route 99 in the Madera Area at about 2 a.m. on Sunday.

The vehicle exited the freeway, drove over a raised median within the city, then re-entered northbound SR-99. Moments later, the driver made a U-turn on the freeway and began traveling the wrong way before eventually turning around and continuing in the correct direction.

CHP Madera officers located the vehicle, and conducted an enforcement stop just south of SR-152.

The driver was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested for DUI. A female passenger was transported from the scene, and later released.

The dangerous driving was captured on a witness’s dash camera and serves as a reminder of how quickly an impaired driver can put countless lives at risk.

If anyone sees a suspected impaired or reckless driver, be a good witness, not a victim. Call 911 when it is safe to do so and provide the vehicle’s location, direction of travel, and description, if possible.
