The Matilda Torres Toros girls basketball team ran away from the Avenal Buccaneers for a 57-21 victory in its home opener.

The Toros forced 41 turnovers and had eight different players score in Tuesday’s win.

Freshmen Kaylin Perez and J’Lynn Mitchell led the Toros in scoring. Perez led the team with 11 points to go with a team-high seven steals. Mitchell recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. She had seven offensive rebounds and five steals.

Nevaeh Chavez scored eight points with two 3-pointers. Sabrina Cerrillo and Layla Webster added seven points each.

The Toros jumped out a 9-2 lead to open the game and outscored Avenal 14-3 in the second quarter for a 23-5 lead.

The Toros didn’t allow Avenal to reach double-figures until there was 37.4 seconds left in the third quarter. The Toros put the game away with a 13-0 run that went from midway through the second quarter to midway through the third quarter

The Toros extended their lead with a 20-10 fourth quarter to put away the Buccaneers.
