As you read this, Brother Cal Tatum, who used to columnize in this space, is well on his way to Wyoming, where he will become managing editor of the twice-weekly paper in Evanston. God speed, good buddy!

I have asked the Great and Powerful Doud to let me take a crack at writing a weekly column for this space and he has acquiesced. I’ve always called my occasional op-ed columns “Gravy by the Slice,” in deference to my inability to make gravy that can be poured from a boat or spooned onto food. I actually made a batch of gravy so bad once I asked my long-suffering husband if he would like a slice of it. So, here’s my take on what’s going on in town.

Today is the main attraction for the Old Timer’s Day celebration, the 10 a.m. parade on Yosemite Avenue. Check out The Madera Tribune float, it is stunning!
