Supervisors to meet ‘on-the-road’

The Madera County supervisors will once again venture outside of the city of Madera for regular board meetings — starting with Chowchilla on Feb. 5.

“It’s going to be our first on-the-road (meeting) of the year, at Chowchilla City Hall,” said Supervisor Brett Frazier earlier this month. “Closed session will start at 4 (p.m.) and regular session at 5.”

The city hall is at 130 S. Second St. Representatives from county departments will be available to provide information and topics of discussion will vary by district.

The next “on-the-road” public meeting will be April 2 at Oakhurst Community Center, 39800 Fresno Flats Road, and the third will be June 18 at Ranchos Middle School, 12455 Road 35 1/2 in the Madera Ranchos.

County supervisors last held public meetings outside of the City of Madera when they went to Madera Ranchos, Fairmead and Oakhurst last year in August through October.

Supervisor Tom Wheeler cited the on-the-road meetings as among the board’s achievements of his past term when he handed the gavel as chairman of the board to Frazier on Jan. 8. Wheeler lamented that “the public doesn’t know what we do.”

Frazier noted difficulties ahead, politically and economically, for the county. Nonetheless “we have so many opportunities in front of us, so we can’t get bogged down on the things that are out of our control. We have a unique opportunity to do things the right way … We are and will continue to be a forward-facing organization.”

He later cited the upcoming meeting in Chowchilla as part of the county’s “open government transformation … designed to encourage participation in the public decision-making process” as well as promoting excellence in public service.
