No such thing as too many figs

People who have their own fig trees (or even just one) could very well disagree when I say there is no such thing as having too many figs.

Having too many, though, is a problem I wish I had. My favorite fig tree, a Black Mission, was my best producer. One day a few years ago, it literally just fell over. All of the roots were gone, and there had been no sign of gophers underground feasting on the roots. I am not sure I will ever get over that disappointment.

I have replacement fig trees, started in pots from pruned branches, but so far have not been able to plant them in the ground, protected in wire cages. It is one of those projects that waits for that day in the future. Meanwhile, I feast when I can on store-bought figs, both fresh and dried.
