MPD makes car theft arrest

Over the past couple of months the City of Madera has experienced a spike in thefts of Hyundai and Kia sedans due to a security key flaw.

The 2018 through 2022 model years are affected by this security key flaw. This security flaw has been exposed and “how to” videos have gone viral on social media platforms.

Madera Police Officers encountered suspects who entered Madera that were linked to several Hyundai and Kia thefts that occurred within minutes of each other. Officers located a Kia sedan that had just been stolen and tried to stop the vehicle. The driver failed to yield and collided into a signal light at Gateway Drive and Olive Avenue. The minor suspects involved, fled on foot but were apprehended a short distance away from the collision.
