Injured pedestrian receives bike

Madera community members with police officer and bike near Christmas tree.
Local residents and police officer celebrate the holiday season with a bike giveaway at the Madera community center.

Last year, Axel Hernandez Franco was struck by a speeding vehicle while cross the street to Liberty Charter School, formerly known as Ezekiel Tafoya Alvarado Academy, on Ellis and Owens streets.

Hernandez Franco sustained major injuries in the Sept. 19, 2023, accident, and is still going through a lengthy recovery.

The investigation determined both the driver of the speeding vehicle and Hernandez Franco were at fault for the crash. As the vehicle sped through the school zone, Hernandez Franco ran across the road, outside the area where the crossing guard was located, without stopping and looking both ways.
