Despite a 2-3-1 record to open the 2021 season, the Liberty Hawks girls soccer team has put in numerous strong performances that deserved a victory.
A single goal loss to both Madera South and San Joaquin Memorial–Fresno saw the Hawks nearly come back.
But on Saturday evening, the Hawks put in a dominant and inspiring performance against Roosevelt.
Liberty scored two goals in the first half, icing the game in the second half with another goal to down the Roosevelt Rough Riders 3-0 in front of a lively crowd at Liberty.
Senior Jackie Smith got on the scoresheet while two underclassmen, Jasmin Jauregui and Marissa Lopez, scored. Saturday’s contest offered fans both a reminder of the present but a glimpse into the future with Lopez and Jauregui leading the way.
Lopez isn’t new to the scoresheet as the sophomore snuck one past the net against McLane. Lopez also assisted in the Liberty Hawks 1-1 draw against the Madera Coyotes.
Despite the goal scorers taking the plaudits, senior Sara Garibay and sophomore Makayla Anguiano assisted with accurate passes and supportive teamwork throughout the match.
Garibay, one of the leaders on the team, has scored three goals so far this season and a lone assist Saturday against Roosevelt.
Senior goalkeeper Carly Tynan was rock solid in the back as well. From communication to actively defusing counter attacks, Tynan showcased her ability in her final season as a Hawk. With an upcoming league season with many challenging games ahead, Tynan’s form will be imperative for the Hawks to have success in the new year.
And Liberty’s 3-0 victory over Roosevelt is just another step closer to North Sequoia League play.
The Hawks finish up their non-conference schedule with matches against Fowler and Clovis East. Then, Liberty must open up the new 2021 league season against Yosemite at home on April 10.
