The Clovis North Broncos jumped on the Madera Coyotes baseball team with seven runs in the first inning for a 13-2 victory in the second game of the Coca-Cola Classic at Mel Parker Field.
The Broncos sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning Tuesday. Madera scored runs in the second and fourth inning, but also had their chances and left 10 runners on base.
Tommy Molina suffered the loss on the mound. He lasted eight batters, allowed three hits, hit a batter and walked three batters.
Brian Hefner settled the Broncos down. He tossed four innings of two-hit ball. He struck out eight and walked one to blank Clovis North.
Shane Purcell, Hefner and Jerry Hernandez each had two hits for the Coyotes.
In the first inning, after Molina got a lineout to the second batter, the next eight batters reached base. Alex Trukki came in relief of Molina and allowed a hit and two inherited runners to score.
The Coyotes got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Hernandez opened the frame with a single. he went to second on a Tony Noriega single and scored on a Purcell single.
Molina led off the fourth with a single and went to second on a Hernandez single. Noriega reached on a fielder’s choice and Molina scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 7-2.
However, the Coyotes left the bases loaded in the first, two on in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth and seventh inning.
Meanwhile, the Broncos scored four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the 13-2 victory.
