Dominate first half leads to Coyote victory

Madera Coyotes quarterback Colt Nelson was responsible for all five touchdowns in a 31-21 victory over Mission Oak-Tulare.

Nelson scored the first touchdown Friday in Tulare on a one-yard run and threw for four more. He led the Coyotes to a 25-0 first half lead before Mission Oak scored three times in the third quarter to cut the lead to 10.

The Coyotes held off Mission Oak for their second win of the season.

After Nelson’s run, he hit Joziah Velasquez for two touchdowns of 13 and four yards. Both extra points were blocked for an 19-0 lead.

Nelson found J.J. Espinoza from 19-yards out to open the lead to 25-0 at the half.

Nelson hit Espinoza in the third quarter for Madera’s final score of the game.

Angel Guizar led the Coyotes with 83 yards rushing.

Nelson was 21-of-34 for 213 yards. Jevon Denis, Espinoza and Velasquez each caught five passes with Denis leading the way with 67 receiving yards.

Madera hosts Kerman on Friday in Memorial Stadium for its home opener.
