The Madera Coyotes girls volleyball team overwhelmed the Madera South Stallions in a league match at Madera South.
The Coyotes outscored the Stallions 75-42 in the three-set sweep Thursday. Madera put down 26 kills to Madera South’s 12. They also had 11 aces to Madera South’s seven.
The Coyotes also had 13 hitting errors. But, the Stallions had 15 with another 12 other errors in the match.
Only one player, from both teams, recorded more than five kills with freshman K’Leeh Spotwood leading both teams with 10 kills. She also led all players with five aces.
The Stallions opened the match with the early lead behind two aces from Maria Hernandez.
Isabella Fessenden served up five straight points, including a kill from Shirley Hernandez to give Madera a 7-5 lead.
After a trade in side outs, Spotwood served up five more points with two aces and a kill from Mia Carlson to take a 15-6 lead.
The Stallions got the side out, and Angelina Alejo served up three points, including an ace to cut the lead to five. Bella Doan added a Stallions’ ace to stay within five.
Bella Haynes served up an ace for the Coyotes before a Stallions’ side out kill from Seraphim Peralta. Another Peralta kill and a point cut the Madera lead to 21-14.
Three side outs later, Fessenden served up two aces and the final point for a 25-16 victory.
Madera South took the early lead, again, in the second set. Dallas Chavira and Peralta put down kills, and Yamileth Castaneda served up an ace for a 3-0 lead. Doan served up two points for a 7-3 Stallions’ lead. An Alejo side out kill gave the Stallions an 8-4 lead.
The Coyotes battled back. After a Stallions’ missed serve, Fessenden served up three points to tie the set with two kills from Spotwood.
After a trade in side outs, including a Hernandez kill, Spotwood served up eight straight points with three aces. Carlson put down two kills in the run for a 16-9 Madera lead.
Sierra Johnson recorded a block to get the lead to 10. Carlson served up two points to get to set point.
On the third set point, Fessenden put down a kill for a 25-15 win.
Madera took the early lead in the third set. Spotwood put down an early kill. Fessenden took advantage of a Stallions’ missed serve to score three straight points, including an ace and a Spotwood kill.
A Hernandez kill on a Madera overpass cut the Coyotes’ lead to 8-6. However, after a Stallions’ missed serve, Haynes served up three straight points with a Carlson kill for a 13-7 lead.
Castaneda served up two aces to cut the lead to three.
Fessenden put down a side out kill, and Carlson served up four straight points. Spotwood had a kill, and Haynes put down a dump kill for an 18-10 lead.
After a trade in side outs, Kaionna Morris served up two aces in a five-point run to get Madera to match point. In the run, Fessenden and Spotwood put down kills.
Chavira held off match point for the Stallions, but Spotwood put down a kill for a 25-12 win, and the match.
