The Madera Coyotes girls water polo team has tougher practices than Wednesday’s playoff match against the Sunnyside-Fresno Wildcats in the Div. II playoffs.
The second seeded Coyotes scored 12 goals in the first period and added seven more in the second period. Madera took its foot off the pedal in the second half and scored three goals for a 25-1 victory over the 15th seeded Wildcats.
Madeleine McNeil led the Coyotes with six goals. Bailey Hansen added five goals. Devina Cazador and Allison Pursell scored three goals each. It was Pursell’s first three goals of the season. Ten different Coyotes scored a goal in the game.
The Coyotes next host No. 7 Selma today at 3:30 p.m. in the McAlister Aquatics Complex.
Madera started the scoring 12 seconds into the match with a goal from Emily Lopez-Ibarra. Hansen scored 33 seconds later.
It took almost a minute before Hansen added another goal. Lola Gill scored 30 seconds later for a 4-0 lead. Ashleyn Ortega scored 34 seconds later for a 5-0 lead.
McNeil scored a goal off a rebound after Lola Gill’s shot hit off the post.
The Coyotes scored three goals in a 42 second span — two goals from Hansen and one from McNeil. McNeil scored a goal with 1:24 left in the first period. McNeil scored a goal with a skip shot past the goalie and Hansen scored with 12 seconds left in the period off an assist from goalie Nicole Gibbs for a 12-0 lead.
McNeil scored 16 seconds into the second period and added another less than 30 seconds later. Just 45 seconds later, Ortega scored off a Hansen assist.
Pursell scored two identical goals within a minute of each other. After a goal from Cazador, Sunnyside scored its lone goal of the game with 2:17 left in the first half.
Pursell added her third goal of the season with a minute left in the half for a 19-1 halftime lead.
Cindy Jauregui scored 26 seconds into the third period for a Coyote goal. Makenna Baker and Cazador added goals in the third period.
Emily Ledesma, Jauregui and Cazador scored in the fourth period for the 25-1 win.
