The Sanger Apaches scored 10 of the game’s first 13 points and the Madera Coyotes’ girls basketball team couldn’t recover in a 49-28 County/Metro Athletic Conference loss.

The Coyotes committed 33 turnovers, including 16 by steals, to Sanger’s relentless full-court press in Friday’s loss. They were outscored 33-13 in the middle two quarters.

While Sanger had two players in double figures, the Coyotes didn’t have any. Rhynne Mitchell led the Coyotes with seven points. Andrea Garcia and Lilly Smith added six points each.

Things were looking positive for the Coyotes at the beginning of the game when Shalynn Garcia hit a 3-pointer to start the game.

However, while Madera committed six turnovers and missed five shots, Sanger scored the next 10 points to take control of the game.

Garcia stopped the run with a layup and steal to cut the lead in half. Sanger closed the first quarter scoring with a layup.

Mitchell made a layup early in the second quarter, but Sanger scored eight straight points for a 22-6 lead.

Garcia stopped the run with a free throw. She then stole the ball from Sanger and turned it into a layup while getting fouled. She made the free throw for the three-point play to cut the lead to 22-12.

Sanger scored the next six points to open the lead to 18 before Kaylee Patlan found Rosie Perez for a layup. After a Sanger free throw, Perez made two free throws.

The Apaches hit a jumper for a 31-14 halftime lead.

Sanger scored six straight points to open the lead to 21 points.

Aasyria Goins found Jasmine Levy for a layup, but the Apaches scored the next six points to close out the third quarter with a 45-18 lead.

It took almost three minutes into the fourth quarter before any team scored. Mitchell got the Coyotes on the scoreboard with a free throw and later coverted a 3-point play.

Sanger made two-of-three free throws before Smith hit the first of her back-to-back 3-pointers to close out Madera’s scoring.
