The Madera Coyotes baseball team haven’t received their Div. II Central Section championship rings due to manufacturing delays, but head coach Andy Underwood isn’t letting that deter him from helping his program raise funds.
The baseball program will host a golf tournament Nov. 13 at the Madera Golf and Country Club, beginning at 1 p.m.
Underwood knows that with the time change, teams may not be able to get all 18 holes in before it gets dark, but hopes everyone is going to have a great time.
“We’re hoping to get everyone through it,” he said.
The cost for the tournament is $100 per person and there will be a variety of different ‘games’ for golfers, including a long drive challenge, a hole-in-one challenge and a Pot of Gold where golfers who are playing get a ticket for landing a ball on the green. It will be a 50/50 raffle.
“This was kind of a let’s do it kind of thing and have fun,” Underwood said. “Everyone wants to make money, but we want to have fun and enjoy everyone out there. We want to reconnect friendships.”
Underwood said he is getting full for golfers, but there are plenty of tee sponsorships available.
“We can take a couple more foursomes,” he said. “I’m not going to turn away golfers. We’re doing okay on tee signs. We can definitely use more of those guys.”
The baseball team held a golf tournament a few years back, but it was discontinued in 2018. Underwood decided to bring it back to have a little fun before getting into the season.
“I wanted to do it again and have a little bit of fun and play some golf,” he said. “We want to get some alumni back in the house.”
There will also be raffle prizes available, along with baked goods, including Underwood’s wife’s famous cookies.
“We could use more raffle prizes,” he said.
