The late Charles Donald Goss, California Highway patrolman, was memorialized Monday in dedication ceremonies at the San Joaquin Winery, and on State Route 152 near Red Top.

Goss was killed instantly on November 25, 1955 near Ash Slough bridge on Hwy. 152 while transporting four victims of an earlier crash to Chowchilla. He was 39.

The accident that took Officer Goss’ life occurred when an oncoming car, driven by Ernest A. Welch, 23, smashed head-on into his patrol car. Welch was attempting to pass a truck. The accident happened at 9:15 a.m. in an extremely foggy portion of Hwy 152.
