Alview-Dairyland 4-H wants to have fun

One of the main goals at Alview-Dairyland 4-H club is to have fun while learning.

The club meets on the first Monday of each month. At the meetings, the members do the pledge of allegiance and the 4-H pledge (Head, Heart, Hands, and Health). They go over previous and upcoming events and close the meeting with a game and snacks. The members also report about each group.

The club offers more than 20 projects, and eight of them are animal projects. The animal projects are dairy, meat goats, dairy goats, pygmy goats, swine, sheep, beef, and rabbits.

According to the dairy group members, regular people may say the heifers look big and scary, but anyone who has shown dairy would not say the same.

Members of the goat group all agree that goats are like a pet but are kept in the pen. Swine is a very popular project and there are many different breeds. Showing sheep is fun and members have to use their bare hands to show. Beef is the club’s newest animal project that started in 2016. Rabbits and pygmy goats are the small animal projects that any member can join, including the mini-members.

Non-animal projects are also open to all members. The Alview-Dairyland club offers, arts and crafts, scrapbooking and more, foods and other, public speaking, engineering – automation, photography, floral designs, community pride, dairy judging, vet science, and shooting sports (rifle, shotgun, and archery). Most members join multiple projects. The club meets from September through June.
