The day before writing this, I bought a couple of small melons called Sugar Kiss. They just looked like cantaloupes, only smaller. Reminded me of what we called muskmelons when I was a kid.
I split a half of one with my husband and we were both very delightfully surprised. Very sweet and not crispy-crunchy, like how some melons are. If you happen to see any of these, take a chance and bring one or two home. You might want to invite melons of any kind to share your table on our great holiday, July 4.
The same day I bought melons, I received an order from a catalog that included spiced watermelon pickles. I bought three jars and plan to give one to my mom. I used to make sweet pickled watermelon rind, back when watermelons were bigger and most had fairly thick rinds. More nostalgia for the good ol’ days, but I make the most of modern times and foods whenever I can. I think all of us do.
