After turning the ball over on downs on its first possession, the Matilda Torres Toros flag football team scored seven touchdowns over its next 10 possessions for a 47-0 victory over the Golden West Trailblazers out of Visalia.
Torres’ victory set program records for most points in a game and biggest margin of victory Wednesday night against the first-year program.
Six different players scored touchdowns with Amerie Lujan scoring touchdowns on both of her pass receptions.
Quarterback Adalynn Chavez threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Crystal Galicia threw for 81 yards and three more touchdowns. Galicia and Mylah Avila scored rushing touchdowns.
Center Victoria Macugay led the Toros with eight receptions for 101 yards. The Toros gained 284 yards of total offense.
The defense was just as effective. Avila picked off three Golden West passes. The Golden West run game went for negative yards. Golden West threw 18 incomplete passes, and just gained 77 yards in the air, and had just 50 yards of total offense.
The Toros finally got the offense started after gaining three yards on their opening possession. Chavez found Macugay for 13 yards, and a first down. After an unnecessary roughness penalty, Chavez hit Lujan on a slant for a touchdown from six yards out.
Three plays later, Avila picked off her first pass, and returned it to the Golden West seven. Two plays later, Chavez found Isabella Perez in the back of the end zone for a touchdown with no time left in the first. Chavez completed a pass to Cadence Mortier for the conversion, and a 14-0 lead.
Two plays later, Avila picked off another pass to set the Toros up. However, the Toros gave the ball right back with an interception near the goal line.
The Toros’ defense forced a punt, and the Toros drove down the field. Galicia found Perez for six yards, and then hit Lujan in the end zone, but a penalty nullified the score.
Galicia scrambled for eight, and then found Mortier in the end zone for the touchdown, and a 21-0 lead.
On the next play, Avila was at the right place at the right time to catch a tipped pass for her third interception of the game.
Four plays later, on fourth-and-goal from the 19, Galicia threw a 50-50 ball into the end zone, and Macugay caught it between two defenders for the touchdown, and a 27-0 halftime lead.
The Toros went on their longest sustained drive of the game, going 66 yards on nine plays for another score. Chavez found Macugay for 19 yards, and a first down to midfield. On third-and-17, Chavez hit Mortier for eight yards, and completed a fourth down pass to Macugay for the conversion.
The Toros tried to give senior captain Avila a chance to score. She took a hand-off to the left side for 12 yards to the two. She got the call again, and scored for a 33-0 lead with 6:27 left in the third quarter.
Torres’ defense forced a punt, and the Toros drove 42 yards for another score. Two completions to Macugay gained 14 yards.
On fourth down, Chavez found Macugay for 15 yards, and a first down. Galicia came in, and hit Lujan in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown, and a 40-0 lead after Chavez found Karina Contreras on a conversion.
After a trade in possessions, the Toros scored their final points. Galicia scrambled for 14 yards to the Golden West 25. An offsides penalty gave the Toros a first down. Two plays later, Galicia scrambled to her left, and then went up the middle for an 18-yard touchdown. She found Chavez in the end zone for the conversion, and the 47-0 final.
