Missing person found, deputy is recovering

Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue updated the community during a Monday press conference, about an officer-involved shooting that happened over last weekend, and also identified an individual that was considered missing.

The individual, Claudia Anguiano, was declared missing after she was last seen June 15, and her husband, Gregory Anguiano, was shot and killed by a MCSO deputy.

Pogue has issued a statement that Cluadia has been found, and she is safe.

“Out of respect for her privacy, we are not going to discuss the specific circumstances of where she was located or why,” Pogue said. “Our focus was making sure she was found, confirming she was safe, and protecting the integrity of the investigation. We understand and can appreciate the public interest, but releasing those details would not serve the investigation and could unnecessarily compromise Claudia’s privacy.”

Pogue also said that now that Claudia has been located, the investigation can shift back to the officer-involved shooting, which is the heart of the investigation.

“Our goal is to gain as complete and accurate a picture as possible of what happened that day, what led up to it, and whether there is any additional information that can help investigators,” Pogue said. “As always, we encourage anyone with information, even something they believe may be minor, to contact the Madera Sheriff’s Office.”

Gregory Anguiano was seen entering a Madera County residence, and was approached by a MCSO deputy. The two had a confrontation, and Anguiano got a hold of the deputy’s TASER, and shot her with it.

Then, Anguiano physically assaulted the deputy while she was on the ground until some civilians stepped in stop the assault.

Anguiano tried to grab the deputy’s gun, but the deputy was able to hold onto it and shot, and killed Anguiano.

Pogue also issued a statement about the recovery of the deputy, whose name has not been released.

“Our deputy is recovering physically and emotionally from an extremely violent and traumatic encounter,” Pogue said. “She has the full support of this agency, and we are making sure she has access to the resources, care, and time she needs. Out of respect for her privacy, I am not going to discuss specific details about her condition.

“When one of our employees is involved in a traumatic critical incident, we take that very seriously. We provide support through peer support, chaplain services, counseling resources, employee assistance programs, and other wellness resources as needed. Our responsibility is not only to investigate the incident thoroughly, but also to make sure our people are cared for after being placed in an incredibly difficult situation.”

Pogue also stated that the actions from the community members were heroic, and he is looking into an appropriate way to honor those courageous citizens.
