How do I Request Event Coverage?

Have an event you’d like the Tribune to cover in person? Here’s how to ask.

Coverage Request

A coverage request is a request for a reporter or photographer to attend your event and report on it. This is different from listing your event on our Community Calendar, and different from sending us a press release — both of those tell readers an event is happening. A coverage request asks us to send someone. We can’t attend everything, but we want to hear what’s happening so we can make good decisions about where our staff goes.

Lead Time

Submit your request at least two weeks before the event. Our staff schedule is set in advance, and the earlier we know about your event, the better the chance we can fit it in.

Last-minute requests usually cannot be accommodated. A request the day before an event almost never reaches a reporter in time. If your event is soon, the fastest way to make sure readers know about it is the Community Calendaror a press release.

Our Response

We’ll respond within two business days to let you know whether coverage is possible.

If you don’t hear back, your request has not been confirmed — please follow up by phone at +1 (559) 674-2424 rather than assuming a reporter will be there.

How Coverage Decisions Are Made

This part matters, so we’ll say it plainly:

Submitting a request does not guarantee coverage. All coverage is subject to staff availability and editorial judgment. We will confirm whether a reporter or photographer is available.

Advertising with the Tribune does not influence coverage decisions. Buying an ad does not buy a reporter at your event, and choosing not to advertise never costs anyone fair coverage.

Editorial and advertising are separate departments with separate functions. The newsroom makes news decisions. The business side makes business decisions. They do not make each other’s.

We hold this line because it’s the only way our reporting is worth anything to you as a reader.

What We Cannot Promise

  • That we will cover any particular event — a request is not a guarantee of coverage
  • A specific reporter or photographer
  • That coverage, if it happens, will appear on any particular date

We will always do our honest best with what you send us.
