Award to rehabilitate houses and wells

Madera County has been awarded $1 million to be used for housing and well rehabilitation.

The county received the money July 10 from the California Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The rehabilitation program will be focused specifically on low-income families who need assistance in making repairs and general property improvements to both owner- and renter-occupied units.

The money will be available for repair or replacement of principle fixtures and components of existing structures, according to Matthew Treber, Madera County Director of Community and Economic Development.

Among such repairs or replacement are heating systems, water or sewer laterals from main lines from the main laterals and well rehabilitation.

The county has participated in the grant program since the 1980s, Treber said.
