Madera County Sheriff Tyson Pogue, left, honors K-9 Tonka at his retirement ceremony on Friday with his handler, Deputy Steven Corner.

After eight years of loyal service, K-9 Tonka had his final log-off on Saturday.

Throughout his career, Tonka served with distinction alongside three dedicated handlers: Corporal Grijalva for nearly two years, Corporal Matt Autry for approximately two-and-a half years, and most recently, Deputy Steven Corner, who has been his partner since 2022.

During his time with Deputy Corner, Tonka became the SWAT K-9 for the Madera County SWAT Team — a role he held for almost three years. Together, they trained extensively in both patrol functions and narcotics detection. Tonka played a vital role in the apprehension of wanted individuals and the discovery of hidden narcotics. His contributions to patrol and SWAT operations were invaluable.
