Commentary: The real cost of cuts — why Fresno and Madera families can’t afford this bill

At United Way Fresno and Madera Counties (UWFM), the words “paths to prosperity” stand in our mission as more than just a tagline. We believe that every family — regardless of income or circumstance — deserves not only the bare necessities required to survive, but to thrive. We envision a region and nation where one’s identity has no bearing on their access to education, well-being or prosperity.

That vision is now at risk.

Federal lawmakers are advancing legislation known as the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Behind the name are harmful cuts to programs that keep working families, seniors and children afloat — programs like SNAP, Medicaid and the Child Tax Credit.
