Hunter’s Drug Store lasted 100 years

Photo - The only drug store in Madera in 1890 belonged to William Hunter. A primitive store in its beginnings, Hunter’s Drugs soon flourished and remained in business in the same location on Yosemite Avenue for 100 years. The installation of a soda fountain inside the drug store was among the first changes made to the business as it began to take shape.

The Dec. 6, 1926 headlines of The Madera Tribune shocked the town. They announced the passing of W.W.W. Hunter, owner of the Hunter Drug Store. He had died suddenly the night before from uremic poisoning from which he had been suffering for some time. He took a severe turn on Sunday afternoon, the day before […]

Nancy’s miracle; fear took flight

Among the multiple concerns which the COVID pandemic has thrust on the human family, the specter of fear could be the worst. We are afraid of contracting the disease. We are afraid of suffering from the disease. We are afraid of dying from the disease, and we are afraid of being afraid of the disease. […]

Appreciating sprouts

Photo - Try making a salad from Brussels sprouts, onion, apple, slivered almonds and a vinaigrette dressing.

By now, many of you have probably picked up on the fact that I have some strange eating habits, even though in my defense, I stay within normal range most of the time. One veggie I am currently fascinated with is the often-scorned Brussels sprout. Whenever I mention it, I get a lot of suggestions […]

Book Talk: The universe — 2 by Tyson

When I started college, we students were required to take at least three courses in “hard science,” (i.e., chemistry, physics, biology, etc.). One of the courses had to be a “lab science.” At the time, my major was Literature and Creative Writing. That fascination only lasted about two years, but we aspiring young Hemingways who […]

Letters: Seeking fair representation in elections

I agree with our founding fathers, who came up with the idea of the electoral college, but ever since the Trump vs. Clinton election — where it did not work out for the democrats — they have been fuming and want to change the way elections have worked for 235 years. While I also agree […]

Opinion: Will state regulators kill solar?

If California’s often misguided utility regulators wanted to prove they are determined to favor privately owned electric companies over almost any other interest, they could not do better than with new rules they now propose to inflict on people with rooftop solar panels. To understand this ongoing dispute, take a look at how utilities like […]
