In hosting the DeWitt Invitational for the first big meet out of the pandemic, Madera South cross country coach Sky Fierro had other problems falling on top of him — the sky.

Although the meet was happening for the first time in two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Fierro had to move up times in the meet because of air quality issues.

He was able to get all 10 races run before noon Saturday at Town and Country Park and the Stallions placed second overall to Clovis West when the dust finally settled.

The Stallions’ junior boys team won its race with 18 place points and placed five of its runners in the top 10.

Madera South’s Dylan Devine ended up with the third best time overall, winning the junior race in 9:22.5.

Teammate Isaac Chavez placed fourth while Adrian Hipolito was sixth, Vidal Luna placed eighth and Estevan Medina was ninth.

The Matilda Torres sophomore boys team edged Clovis by one point for the sophomore race win.

Ozzy Hernandez led the Toros with a fifth place finish. Alvino Diaz also finished in the top 10.

Following Diaz was Miguel Ramirez in 14th place, Armando Guzman in 17th and Omar Jayme in 18th.
