Matilda Torres’ Will Valmonte throws a pitch during Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Firebaugh. Valmonte threw 6 2/3 hitless innings in the victory. He also had three hits and drove in the only run of the game.
In what could have been a storybook beginning, the Matilda Torres Toros baseball team opened its new stadium with a 1-0 victory over the Firebaugh Eagles on Thursday evening.
Ace Will Valmonte almost had the storybook start to the new stadium. He went the first 6 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. An infield fly ball was missed/dropped for an error, and the next batter laced a single into right for the only hit of the game.
The Toros came away with the win in their first game in their new baseball stadium. After playing at home the first year, the Toros were nomads last year while their stadium was getting built before returning Thursday.
