The origins of Madera Unified School District
For The Madera Tribune
Webster School, shown here, was one of the one-school districts that reluctantly became part of the Madera Unified School District. Not one voter in the Webster district cast a vote for unification.
Madara was founded in 1876.
In 1877, before the town was a year old, the people built a school. They named it East Side school because it was on the east side of town.
That first school was just a one-story frame building. Later they tore it down and built a two-story frame structure, and then they tore that one down as well. Actually, it burned, so they built a three-story brick building, the third East Side School.
