Stallions get rout to open tourney

The Madera South Stallions opened its Madera South Shootout with a rather easy 54-15 victory over Firebaugh.


The Stallions didn’t allow the Eagles to score a point for the first 11 minutes of the game and cruised to a running clock win Wednesday evening at Madera South.


Seven different Stallions scored with four scoring nine or more points. Jocelyn Barrera recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Stallions. Mayra Ceballos scored 11 points with nine rebounds.


Mayrilyn Vasquez and Brianna Lorta added nine points each.


The Stallions forced 32 Eagle turnovers in the game, including 22 in the first half. Madera South also recorded 22 steals with five players recording three each.


The Stallions shut out the Eagles in the first quarter. Jasmine Barrera recorded a 3-point play, Ceballos made four free throws and a layup and Vasquez hit a 3-pointer for a 12-0 lead.


Madera South scored the first 19 points of the second quarter before Firebaugh finally scored with 3:24 left in the half. Marrero, Barrera (twice), Vasquez (twice), Ceballos and Lorta made buckets, and Lorta added a 3-pointer. A Ward 3-pointer gave the Stallions a 36-2 lead at the half.


Ceballos scored the first three points of the second half while Firebaugh outscored Madera South 9-3 in the quarter.


The Stallions went on a 15-2 run to put the game away in the fourth quarter.


Lorta turned a steal into a layup and made another off an assist from Ward. Barrera put back a miss, Jalissa Kirkpatrick got a steal and made a layup, Ward hit a 3-pointer and she found Barrera for another layup.


Jessica Ramirez hit Vasquez for a layup to close out the 54-15 victory.
