Stallions complete sweep of Coyotes

Although the Madera South Stallions girls volleyball team was missing two of its four coaches, they still had enough firepower for a three-set win over the Madera Coyotes to complete the season sweep.
Head coach Travis McEowen and assistant coach Madie Devine were absent from Thursday’s contest, but assistant coaches Jacky Granados and Justin van Loon led the Stallions to the definitive sweep.
The Stallions outscored the Coyotes75-54 in the sweep. Jazlynn Vargas led the Stallions with 15 kills. Anna Kajitani and Angelina Aguirre each had four in the win. Jocelyn Prudente-Martinez added five blocks with four solo.
The last time the two teams met, Madera only registered 13 kills. Despite not having middle blocker Jasmin Rodriguez, who had 11 kills in a sweep over Liberty last week, the Coyotes put down 20 kills, led by Aliyah Garcia, who had eight. Zariah Bryant added six kills.
The Coyotes took the early 3-1 led, but the Stallions got a kill from Danae Prudente and an ace from Diana Moreno to take a 5-3 lead. Bryant put down a side out kill to get the lead to one.
An ace from Prudente gave the Stallions an 8-5 lead, but a bump kill by Alyssa Jimenez gave the Coyotes the side out.
After a Madera South side out, Vargas recorded a kill by finding the back corner.
Setter Elissa Escobar served up five straight points after a Madera hit out of bounds. Escobar served up an ace, Vargas had two kills and Aguirre had a tip kill in the run for a 16-7 lead.
Moreno served up three points with an Aguirre kill to extend the lead to 20-10 before Madera got a Kylie Bursey kill for side out.
After a Madera missed serve, Prudente put down a pair of kills and Kajitani added another to get to set point, leading 24-11.
Madera got the side out and added another point. Garcia put down a kill on the third set point for the Coyotes, but Madera hit out of bounds for a 25-14 Madera South win.
Escobar served the Stallions to the early lead in the second set. Prudente-Martinez recorded a solo block and Vargas put down a kill.
The Coyotes cut the lead to one before an Aguirre kill and a Moreno ace gave the Stallions a 6-3 lead.
Madera tied the set after two points from Bryant before a Kajitani kill.
Prudente then served up six straight points. In the run, Vargas had three kills and a solo block and Prudente served up an ace for a 14-7 lead.
After a trade in side outs, Kajitani had her turn behind the line and sored three straight points with two Vargas kills and a Prudente-Martinez solo block for an 18-8 lead.
Jimenez served up four straight points for the Coyotes, including an ace. Garcia added a kill to cut the lead to 18-13.
Prudente-Martinez recorded a solo block for the side out and combined with Vargas for a dual block.
After two missed serves from Madera South, Madera added a point and cut the lead to five.
The Coyotes got side out kills from Jimenez and Bryant, but the Stallions got a side out kill from Kajitani and a missed serve for set point. Prudente ended the set with an ace for a 25-18 win.
Escobar served up an ace for an early 3-0 third set lead. Prudente-Martinez recorded a solo block and Vargas put down a kill.
Garcia got the side out with a tip kill and added another to start a four-point run. Garcia served up an ace and tied the set at five.
Madera South got the serve and Aguirre recorded a solo block for an 8-5 lead. After a side out kill by Bryant, Karissa Rodriguez served up an ace to cut the lead to one.
Aguirre served up an ace for the Stallions for an 11-7 lead. After a Madera side out, Hannah Eades served an ace for a 14-8 lead.
Vargas put down a pair of side out kills to keep the lead at six. Bursey put down a kill for the Coyotes to cut the lead to four. After a Madera South side out, Garcia put down a kill to keep the deficit at four.
Garcia served up an ace for the Coyotes and Moreno served up one for the Stallions for a 19-14 lead.
Rodriguez served up four straight points, including an ace to tie the set at 19. Bryant had two kills in the run.
After a Madera missed serve, Aguirre served up two points for a 22-19 lead.
Madera got the side out on a missed serve, but Vargas got the side out back with a kill on a down ball.
Kajitani put down a kill to get to set point, leading 24-21.
Madera missed its serve for match point, but Vargas put down a kill for the set win, 25-22, and the match win.
Madera South began North Yosemite League on Tuesday at home against Sunnyside and hosts Sanger West on Thursday before hosting the Madera Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Meanwhile, Madera plays at Reedley on Thursday before playing in the Madera Classic at Madera South this weekend.
