Opinion: Yesterday and today

At the end of another year in my long life, I take time to think about how things were when I was growing up and how conditions have changed as I’ve grown old.
It is said that with age comes wisdom. I’m not convinced. When I was 18, I knew everything. Now, I’m still learning. But memory is a problem. I can’t tell you what I had for lunch yesterday, but I remember things from many decades ago with crystal clarity. Of course, there are fewer people around every year to correct me if my memory is mistaken. However, I recognize change.
Aliens
When I was a child, aliens stayed on their own planet and Flash Gordon went to them in his cardboard rocket ship that emitted sparks from its aft aperture. Now aliens fly overhead, have been seen by military pilots, and are kept under wraps by our government. Of course, I’m writing about other-worldly aliens, not the ones streaming across our southern border from other parts of the earth.
