Former Madera Coyote standout Jazzel Ruiz helped the Madera Community College Mountain Lions to an impressive 8-9-3 record in its first year. Ruiz earned first-team All-Conference honors and was a nominee for Player of the Year.
For most first-year programs, expectations are not high.
However, for the Madera Community College women’s soccer program, not only did they just finish their first season, they were also the first athletic program in the school’s history.
“I don’t think it’s ever been done by a first-year program to finish as well as we did,” head coach Jerry Stupar said. “I looked at the last 10 years. Reedley started 0-16 in their first year. No one has ever been close to .500 with a first-year program. We did that with 26 freshmen.”
