Going nuts? Enjoy it

Fresh from the oven, or saved for later, almond crescent cookies are sure to melt in your mouth.

It never fails that every late fall, and all through winter, I get a craving for nuts. But they must be the kind that are still in their shells, such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, pistachios and Brazil nuts.

I might as well add chestnuts, as I have always had a near-addiction for them, even as a kid. It is kind of hard to have to order the walnuts, since I got spoiled growing up having several large walnut trees to provide for the whole family’s needs.

My Italian grandmother used to put a trayfull on top of the heater in her kitchen, and they would dry out and get lightly toasted in the process. My dad, who always worked outside, would come into the house and exclaim how hot it was in there. He used to tell her she was going to burn up if she kept hovering over the heater.
