A temporarily closed sign is placed outside of the Walgreens on Cleveland Avenue on Tuesday following a homicide Monday night.

Madera Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Walgreens on the 2000 block of Cleveland Avenue.

When officers arrived on scene Monday at about 9:35 p.m., they found the suspect at his car. He surrendered and was taken into custody. He is identified as Narcisco Gallardo Fernandez, who traveled to Madera from Pixley.

“He was at his car, re-loading, as the officers arrived,” Madera Chief of Police Gino Chiaramonte said. “I commend the officers for their bravery and quick response. They prevented further loss of life. I can’t say for sure, but I think he wasn’t finished.”
