Madera’s Aaliyah String goes up for two of her eight points in Tuesday’s win over Garza.

The Madera Coyotes girls basketball team had to wait off the Winter Break rust to battle though a 44-36 victory over the Justin Garza Guardians in Joe Flores Gym on Tuesday.

Madera trailed by five heading into the fourth quarter, but outscored the Guardians 25-12 to record the eight point win. Madera also went 14-of-18 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

“We knew in the film, if we ran them, they would get tired. We knew if we were aggressive with the ball, they were going to foul. And both worked to our advantage tonight,” head coach Jason Smith said. “It was also the halftime adjustments the girls made. I needed the girls to be aggressive going to the rim and not shying away from contact. We got to the line a lot because we were going at them and creating contact.”
