Coyotes hang on for playoff win over Golden West

After Stevie Estrada missed two free throws, he was given a second chance and hit a jumper with 5.7 seconds left to give the Madera Coyotes boys basketball team a 50-48 Div. III first-round playoff victory over the Golden West Trailblazers.

The seventh-seeded Coyotes still had to hold its breath as the 10th-seeded Trailblazers went the length of the court and missed a contested layup before the buzzer sounded for a victory Saturday in Joe Flores Gym.

“It’s pretty crazy. He made the harder shot. He’s a special talent. He’s been very coachable this season. I’m happy for him,” head coach David Lozano said of Estrada. “It’s pretty big. We just want to keep playing basketball. It was a little dicey after Stevie missed those free throws. But, Stevie went to the next play and they are all excited. It’s a true team.”
