Madera pitcher Viviana Nombrano places the tag on a runner at the plate in the sixth inning of Tuesday’s  playoff loss to Kingsburg.

Controversial call reverses Madera’s fortunes

KINGSBURG — In a tightly contested game, one call one way or the other can turn the fortunes around for either team.

For the Madera Coyotes softball team, they were in that situation in extra innings in a Div. 1 Central Section first-round playoff game against Kingsburg.

With a runner at first with one out, Kingsburg laced a ball off the left field fence. Left fielder Savana Cortez quickly got to the ball and hit cut-off man Brilynn Santiago, who fired a strike to third baseman Kailea Ricks to try to get the runner at first heading to third.
