City council names Women of the Year

Madera City Council members each selected and honored a woman of the year from their districts while the Madera Mayor honored two women from Madera during the meeting on Wednesday night. From left are Madera City Clerk Alicia Gonzales, Meghan Oxelson, Councilman Rohi Zacharia, Sally Bomprezzi, Councilman Steve Montes, Stephanie Nathan, Mayor Cece Gallegos, Julia O’Kane, Councilwoman Anita Evans, Jessica Melgoza, Michelle Oberti-Desmond, Councilwoman Elsa Mejia, Mari Jimenez and Councilman Artemio Villegas.
Members of the Madera City Council took time to recognize the achievements and contributions of several outstanding women in Madera and presented them with Women of the Year awards, as Madera recognizes National Women’s Day this week.
The month of March was also recognized as American Red Cross month and Scout Troop 117 was recognized as they celebrate its centennial anniversary.
In its fourth year, Madera City Councilmembers honor women from its community with the Woman of the Year Award. Given to individuals for their distinguished contributions and accomplishments within the community, individuals are selected from each district, along with a selection by the mayor. After honoring recipients of the award from years pasts, this years recipients were announced and presented with flowers and a plaque in commemoration.
