The world was definitely MSHS’s Fashion Club’s runway for their Second Annual Fashion Show held Feb, 9 at the MSHS cafeteria, beautifully decorated by Martha’s Decorations.

Students modeled the latest in fashion from local businesses, including This and That Boutique, Rue 21, Mi Amor, Ortiz Western Wear, Sitting Pretty of Chowchilla, and David’s Bridal of Fresno as well as their own collections of gorgeous Indian saris, spunky J-Pop (Japanese), and striking Nigerian traditional wear.

Special guest Kimberly Marquez, local Q97.1 radio host and recently crowned 2018 Nuestra Belleza USA, opened the show, while Benjamin Madrigal acted as emcee.

The lively and colorful Madera High Folklorico dance troup, lightning fast moves from Banda’s Kempo Karate, a talented musical trio from MSHS, and the 501st Legion and Mandalerian Mercs provided the entertainment.

The show began with ensembles from the Mock Interview Closet, a collection of gently used professional clothing organized and maintained by the Fashion Club and made available free of charge to MSHS seniors for their mock interviews.

It was followed by spring fashions from local shops and boutiques, ranging from street wear and classic, casual chic, and prom formal. Thirty-five models danced and strutted their stuff before a near sold-out crowd.

Fashion Club Advisor Gloria VanderLaan said, “I like to bring all the community together with the resources that we have and include our students and their talents. The posters, the videography, choreographing their own dances, sound, music playlist, lighting, decorating, even selling tickets create a sense of self-worth. They’re amazing, all of these kids.

“What really inspires me is to see each individual grow so that a student can be comfortable in their own skin, no matter who they are, what ethnicity, what shape or form. When I see that then I know that we’ve done a good job.”

Proceeds from the Fashion Show are used to fund the Fashion Club’s yearly trip to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Debut held at FDIM’s Los Angeles campus.
