Immigration answers are above my pay grade
Our fellow citizens in Hawaii got the surprise of their lives on Saturday. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency activated its warning system, announcing by text message the imminent arrival of a ballistic missile attack. Some 38 minutes later HEMA sent a second message through the system stating the first message was an error.
According to a report in The New York Times, the hapless employee that allowed the message to be sent has been reassigned but not identified. As David Letterman was fond of saying on his late night talk show, “I wouldn’t give his troubles to a monkey on a rock.”
According to CNN, the State of Hawaii began preparing for the possibility of a missile attack in December. The protocol called for a nuclear warning siren test to be sounded at 11:45 a.m. the first business day of the month. The warning system consisted of a 50-second siren blast, followed by a 10-second pause and then a second 50-second alert. These tests have been suspended as the state investigates just how a kerfuffle the size of this one could occur.
The islands that comprise Hawaii are about 5,000 miles from North Korea. They would have about 20 minutes between the launch of a missile and its detonation.
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis tore into President Trump blaming him for the incident.
Tweeting from @jamieleecurtis, she wrote, “This Hawaii missile scare is on you Mr. Trump. The real fear that mothers & fathers & children felt is on you. It is on your arrogance, hubris, narcissism, rage, ego, immaturity, and your unstable idiocy. Shame on your hate filled self. You did this.”
A state employee in Hawaii accidentaly hits the wrong button during a safety drill and somehow Curtis blames POTUS. He was playing golf in Florida at the time. She has a lot of nerve tossing around words such as “arrogance, hubris, narcissism, rage, ego, immaturity, and your unstable idiocy.”
Wasn’t she one of the celebrities who threatened to move out of the USA if The Donald were elected? Why hasn’t there been a mass exodus of celebrities and actors leaving America? What are these people waiting for?
President Trump also came under fire for a comment he made about Haiti, African countries and El Salvador. The word he used is profanity and inappropriate for this publication. The definition of the word he allegedly used is described as “an extremely dirty, shabby or otherwise unpleasant place.” According to CNN, the focus on the profanity the president may have used has completely missed the point of the discussion. Trying to work out an immigration plan, Congress is threatening to shut down the government this weekend.
One of the stumbling blocks is the fate of the so-called Dreamers. Under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, an estimated 800,000 people were brought to this country illegally as children.
People who have lived in this country for decades are being deported back to their country of origin.
One such individual, Jorge Garcia of Michigan, has lived in the US for 30 years. Why in all that time didn’t he become either a registered alien or even a US citizen? He has been married for 15 years to an American citizen. His wife, Cindy Garcia, appeared on CBS This Morning stating that since their marriage they have been trying to obtain legal status for her husband. These attempts brought his status to the attention of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Previous deportation orders had been stayed during the Obama administration, CNN said. Mr. Garcia is too old to qualify for DACA status.
Undocumented people who commit crimes should be tried and punished in this country before being deported. It is way above my pay scale to decide what should be done to Garcia and people like him who have been law-abiding members of society and are now being deported.
It would seem to me that the resources being devoted to this deportation would be better utilized to protect our borders from any more undocumented people.
