Election ballot choices revealed
With the closing of filing for local offices Aug. 17, several candidates were left unopposed. They have won by default and most will not appear on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Others face opposition, and their names will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot, acccording to information from the office of Madera County Clerk-Recorder Rebecca Martinez, whose office supervises elections. These include:
Mayor of Madera — Businessman and District 2 Councilman Andrew Medellin was elected by default, but his name will appear on the ballot.
Madera City Council, District 2 — Businessmen Jim da Silva and Jose Rodriguez will face each other. The position is the one being vacated by Andrew Medellin, who was elected mayor by default.
Madera City Council District 4 — Derek Orlando Robinson, Sr., the incumbent, was elected to a second term by default. His name will, however, appear on the ballot.
Madera City Council, District 6 — Incumbent Donald E. Holley will face challenger Ron Montoya.
Madera Irrigation District director, Division 2 — Incumbent, farmer Rick Cosyns was elected by default.
Madera Irrigation District director, Division 4 — Incumbent, farmer and businessman Jim Erickson, was elected by default.
Madera Irrigation District director, Division 5 — Incumbent Carl Janzen will face challenger John Bese, a chief of operations maintenance.
Madera Unified School District Governing Board director, Area 1 — Incumbent, businessman and farmer Ray Seibert will face senior criminal investigator Sgt. Luis Carrillo.
Madera Unified School District Governing Board director, Area 3 — Retired police Sgt. Ruben Mendoza will face Sarah Stutler-Machado for the seat being vacated by incumbent Robert Garibay.
Madera Unified School District Governing Board director, Area 6 — Incumbent, Sales manager Ricardo “Ric” Arredondo will face challenger Lynn Cogdill, a personnel commissioner and former MUSD board member.
Golden Valley Unified School District Governing Board member, Area 3 — Businessman Warren Parr will face financial advisor Andy Wheeler for the seat being vacated by incumbent Michael Kelly.
Golden Valley Unified School District Governing Board member, Area 5 — Incumbent Steven Lewis will face challenger Mark Toole.
Madera County Board of Education members — Incumbents elected by default: Grant G. Sturm, Area 1; Nancy Prosperi, Area 4; Cathie Bustos, Area 5; and Bobby Thatcher, Area 7.
Chawanakee Unified School District Governing Board — Incumbents elected by default: Jessie Hutchens, Area 4; and Claudia Box, Area 5.
Yosemite Unified School Governing Board — Incumbents elected by default: Tammy Loveland, Area 3; and Joe Smith, Area 4.
Chowchilla Union High School District Governing Board — Incumbents elected by default: Steve H. Massaro, Area 1; and Brenton Tatom, Area 3.
Chowchilla School District Governing Board — Incumbent elected by default: Charlene V. Petitt, Area 1. Jan Crader, candidate for seat being vacated by Barbara Schnoor, was elected by default.
Chowchilla City Council — Elected by default: John Chavez, Dennis Haworth, Richard L. Walker and Ray Barragan, Jr.
