Help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’
Public asked to leave food by mailbox Today letter carriers will do a lot more than collect and deliver mail. They will also pick up non-perishable food donations left at mailboxes as they visit every home in the nation.
The 24th Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive is today — the largest one-day food drive in the USA. The U.S. Postal Service and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association join NALC as official sponsors in this effort to ‘stamp out hunger’ in our nation. Other sponsors include Valpak, United Food & Commercial Workers and United Way of America.
In 2015, over 71 million pounds of food was collected by Postal carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. To date, the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food.
The food drive’s timing is no accident. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need...
