We just have to find a way to dig a little deeper.”

The Cougars scored a pair of goals in the final minute of the first half and added two more in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Clovis’ final three goals came as a direct result of a Madera turnover in front of their own goal.

“We made wrong decisions,” Landeros said. “Against a quality opponent like Clovis, they are going to punish you every time you make a mistake. That’s why we play against these opponents so we can learn from those mistakes. We will watch the film and correct it in training.”

Landeros is hoping those mistakes don’t appear against Madera South in their annual rivalry game.

“We have our rivalry game on Friday and it’s a game we always want. I’m confident these boys will step up for that game,” Landeros said.

Clovis had a couple of steals early in the first half against the Coyotes, but the Cougars didn’t find the back of the net.

Madera had their chances to score in the first half. Kenji Tiscareno sent a pass across the face of the goal in the 14th minute, but it was just too far for a sliding Julian Ramirez. A minute later, Isaac Pinedo tried a long shot, but it was just wide in the 15th minute. Tiscareno tried a 35-yard shot, but it just went over the crossbar.

Clovis ended the scoring drought with a goal in the 33rd off a Madera deflection. Then, a counterattack led to a Cougar’s goal in the 36th minute for a 2-0 lead at the half.

In the second minute of the second half, Clovis got a through ball to the front and beat the keeper for a 3-0 lead.

Five minutes later, Madera truned the ball over in front of their keeper and the Cougars shot inside the near post for a 4-0 lead.

The Coyotes got a glimmer of hope in the 10th minute when Joad Enriquez-Blanco stole the ball from Clovis and sent a pass to the middle for Alan Morfin. Morfin beat the keeper and shot into the open net for a 4-1 lead.

The Cougars took advantage of a turnover in front of the goal for a 5-1 lead in the 27th minute.

About a minute later, Madera turned the ball over, again, in front of their own goal and beat the keeper for a 6-1 lead.

The Clovis Cougars took advantage of mistakes by the Madera Coyotes boys soccer team for a 6-1 non-conference victory in Memorial Stadium.
