2014<\/h2>

<\/p>

The Madera Coyote boys basketball team opened a 15-point first half lead held on at the end for a 52-44 victory over the San Joaquin Memorial-Fresno Panthers.<\/p>

<\/p>

The Coyotes held the lead throughout the game, but the Panthers cut the lead to three late in the game before Madera made 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute to preserve the lead in Joe Flores Gym.<\/p>

<\/p>

Mackey West scored 17 points. He went 6-of-6 from the free throw line and hit three 3-pointers to go with seven rebounds and four steals.<\/p>

<\/p>

Ethan Richardson added 14 points with five rebounds to lead Madera to its first County\/Metro Athletic Conference win since 2012. Madera didn\u2019t win a CMAC game last season and ended 2012 with a home win against Sanger.<\/p>

<\/p>

The Coyotes shot 74 percent from the free throw line (17-of-23), including making 7-of-8 in the final two minutes. They also were 6-of-15 from 3-point land and forced 21 turnovers.<\/p>

Coyotes fall in OT<\/strong><\/p>

When the Madera boys soccer team faced Sanger, both teams were seeking their first County\/Metro Athletic Conference win of the season.<\/p>

<\/p>

After each team couldn\u2019t score in regulation, it was the Apaches that prevailed in overtime and notched a \u2018W\u2019 in the CMAC win column with a 1-0 road victory over the Coyotes.<\/p>

<\/p>

It was Sanger\u2019s second overtime game in Memorial Stadium this season after tying Madera South 1-1.<\/p>

2016<\/h2>

<\/p>

Wrestling beats Bullard<\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

The mark of a great team is it can still get the job done even when it\u2019s not at its best.<\/p>

<\/p>

Despite facing injuries and last-minute changes to the line-up, the Madera South wrestling team found itself on the winning end of a 40-30 County\/Metro Athletic Conference dual meet with Bullard-Fresno.<\/p>

<\/p>

Behind early pins from Auggie Garcia (145 pounds) and Ricardo Adame (152) along with a 4-0 win by Dylan Miracle (160), the Stallions jumped out to a 15-0 lead.<\/p>

<\/p>

According to Stallion head coach Sal Gonzalez, those early matches were pivotal in helping his team improve to 2-0 in the CMAC.<\/p>

<\/p>

The Stallions were aided by two forfeits and wins on the mat including a 9-0 decision by Nathan Chavez (195), a 4-3 triple overtime victory by Robert Valenzuela (285), and a Carlos Posas pin (106) to build a 40-21 lead before Bullard took the final three matches.<\/p>

Stallions first in CMAC<\/strong><\/p>

In a showdown between undefeated County\/Metro Athletic Conference girls soccer teams Madera South and Edison-Fresno, it was the Stallions who were able to stay ahead in the league standings.<\/p>

<\/p>

The Stallions improved to 3-0 in the CMAC with a 2-0 win over the Tigers in Memorial Stadium.<\/p>

<\/p>

Madera South got a goal from Sabrina Ibrahim in ninth minute before Jasmine Garibay\u2019s early score in the second half was enough to put away the Tigers.<\/p>

<\/p>

Behind the defensive play of Francesca Aviles-Winn, Angelica Gutierrez, Esmeralda Navarro, Adriana Arce and goalkeeper Cassandra Martinez, Madera South kept its shutout streak of three games alive.<\/p>

<\/p>

Stallions fall to league leaders<\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

Madera South boys basketball head coach Jody Sharp knew his team was going into the proverbial hornet\u2019s nest this week with County\/Metro Athletic Conference Div. I powers Bullard-Fresno and Edison-Fresno.<\/p>

<\/p>

The Stallions cut Bullard\u2019s lead to three midway through the fourth quarter. However, the Knights closed out the game by scoring seven of the next 10 points for a 65-58 victory at Madera South.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m proud of the kids,\u201d Sharp said. \u201cWe gave ourselves a chance and that\u2019s all you can ask. We made mistakes and they hurt us. They are always in attack mode. My guys have to know they have to amp it up at the defensive end.\u201d<\/p>

Junior Segura led the team with 17 points and Hakeem Prime added 13. Jonah Johnson scored nine with nine rebounds.<\/p>

Coyotes stunned by Panthers<\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

By the time the Madera Coyote girls basketball team returns home, head coach Jason Smith may want to work to remove the invisible shield covering the Coyotes\u2019 basket.<\/p>

<\/p>

The Coyotes couldn\u2019t get shots to go down during a 36-33 loss to the San Joaquin Memorial-Fresno Panthers.<\/p>

<\/p>

Madera shot just 19 percent from the field, including 4-for-28 in the first half. They also made just 1-of-14 from 3-point land and were just 13-of-28 (46 percent) from the free throw line. They missed seven free throws in a row at one point and couldn\u2019t take advantage of two technical foul calls against the Panthers, missing all four free throws.<\/p>

Alyssa Burton recorded a double-double, leading the Coyotes with 12 points and 17 rebounds, eight on the offensive glass with four blocked shots. Ashley Hansen scored seven points before receiving her second technical foul and was ejected from the game.<\/p>

Four-goal hero powers Madera<\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

Madera Coyote girls soccer player Itzel Rodriguez\u2019s magical season continues to roll on after a four-goal performance upended next-door rivals Madera South 4-0 at Memorial Stadium.<\/p>

<\/p>

Rodriguez took the plaudits for the four goals, but as a team, the Coyotes worked as a cohesive unit on the pitch to take the County\/Metro Athletic Conference victory. Klarissa Ramos and Penelope Leach also made an impact with a combined three assists after they helped set up Rodriguez throughout the match.<\/p>

Stallions get second win over Coyotes<\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

A combination of outside shooting to go with trap pressure defense led the Madera South Stallions girls basketball team to its second straight victory over the Madera Coyotes.<\/p>

<\/p>

Lexi Eller hit all six of Madera South\u2019s 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 22 points while the Stallions forced 27 turnovers in a 45-33 victory to complete the first round of the County\/Metro Athletic Conference.<\/p>

<\/p>

Madera South used a 15-2 run in the third and fourth quarter to separate itself from the Coyotes on the backs of its half-court trap defense, which forced the Coyotes into 15 second half turnovers.<\/p>

<\/p>

Aleecia Rosel added 12 points for the Stallions to go with a team-high eight rebounds. However, Rosel and Eller combined for 34 of the team\u2019s 45 points (75 percent) and were the only players to score in the first half.<\/p>

BriAnn Houghton and Cathy Figueroa led the Coyotes with 12 points each. Houghton added eight rebounds. Madeleine McNeil added eight points with nine rebounds and Sofia Perez led the team with 10 rebounds.<\/p>

Madera South ride second-half surge over Madera<\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

The Madera South Stallions capitalized on a second-half wave of momentum to defeat their next-door rivals Madera Coyotes in a 3-1 boys soccer win in Memorial Stadium.<\/p>

<\/p>

Jesse Flores, Abraham Vasquez and Jose Chavez each contributed with a goal as the Stallions took another step towards the County\/Metro Athletic Conference summit. Christian Meza and Julian Ayala had three combined assists.<\/p>

Coyotes holdoff Stallions\u2019 rally <\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

The Madera High School and Madera South boys basketball teams added another memorable episode in their ongoing rivalry. The latest chapter ended with Madera holding off a furious rally to win 58-53 in Joe Flores Gym.<\/p>

<\/p>

With the Coyotes holding the lead for most of the night, the Stallions put together several runs to get back in the game, but came up short in the end.<\/p>

Liberty hangs on late against Eagles <\/strong><\/p>

<\/p>

FRESNO \u2014 Despite shooting 5 for 29 in the game, Liberty\u2019s Makani Whiteside scored 24 points and delivered a gritty and focused performance to lead the Hawks boys basketball team to a 71-66 non-conference victory over the Firebaugh Eagles at Edison High School.<\/p>

Liberty went to the charity stripe 17 times, including eight times in the final quarter. Whiteside and Gary Afonin led the charge scoring a combined 15 points in the final quarter to stave off any comeback attempt.<\/p>

\u201cWe know if our shot isn\u2019t falling to attack the paint,\u201d Gonzales said. \u201cEvery time Makani drives, he attracts so much attention and picks up the contact to get to the line. We went 25-31 as a team. That\u2019s what really sealed the game. Makani went 14-of-18 and Gary 9-of-10.\u201d<\/p>
