Wanda Lou Benard was born on Sunday, April 24, 1938 in Fallis, OK, and passed from this life into the waiting arms of Jesus and her precious husband Webster Benard on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026 in Fresno, CA, at the age of 88.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born as the third child to Phillip and Dorothy Ross \u2014 a young couple struggling to farm the dry red dirt of Agra, OK, in the aftermath of the Dust Bowl \u2014 Wanda loved the simple, carefree joy of rural life surrounded by a large and loving extended family and the steady drone of barnyard animals. Sadly, while still a young girl, her parents \u2014 like many others living in the south central U.S. during that time \u2014 were eventually forced to sell off what was left of their beleaguered homestead and relocate westward to California in the early 1940s, in search of steady work and a fresh start. Ironically, they eventually settled in another small farming community called Madera where she would spend the rest of her life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In time, Wanda adapted well to her new surroundings and gradually grew up to be a lovely and engaging young lady, yet with a fiery spirit fueled and accentuated by her striking red hair. Before long, she caught the attention of another former Oklahoman \u2014 a tall, lean, ruggedly handsome, no nonsense, dark-haired young airman named Webster Benard. With that, they began dating whenever he was on leave, fell deeply in love (despite the distance), and were married not long after she graduated from high school and he rotated out of the Air Force in 1956.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following a heartbreaking miscarriage, three children arrived \u2014 a boy and two girls. And while it was always a struggle financially, she never failed to fill their home with faith, love and laughter \u2014 which she had learned long ago were riches far exceeding even the greatest material wealth. Moreover, she always managed to work part-time to help make ends meet \u2014 ultimately landing a wonderful job as a teacher\u2019s aide at Millview Elementary where she helped shape countless young lives before retiring in 1998.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all else, Wanda was a woman of deep, abiding faith. It began as a young girl when her mother became very ill and was near death. In response, she pledged to God in prayer that she would always attend church herself and also raise her future children to know and serve Him if He would just spare her mother. In His mercy and providence, God did exactly that, and so Wanda began keeping her promise. Through the years, she slowly developed a deeper understanding of the Lord, His Word, and His marvelous grace manifested through Christ, culminating in a tearful surrender of her own life to Him in 1981. Not long after, her three children (whom she had indeed taken to church when young and later brought back as adults) also came to saving faith and were baptized, followed lastly by her lifelong evangelism project and dearest love, Web. Today, that same legacy continues on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and prayerfully many generations to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Phillip and Dorothy Ross, brothers Jimmy and Billy Ross (and son David), and of course her beloved husband Webster Benard. She is survived by her brother Charles Ross of Rowlett, TX (and family); sister Delores Sanchez of Madera, CA (and family); son Barry Benard (and wife Tricia) of Abilene, TX; daughter Denise Schoettler (and husband Matt) of Chowchilla, CA; and daughter Cynthia Beakes of Madera, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Stephen Schoettler of Chowchilla, CA; Kelsey Mehrten (and husband Alec) of Temple, TX; Kristen Schoettler of Los Angeles, CA; Cortney King (and husband Jared) of Madera, CA; Phillip Benard of Abilene, TX; Taylor Beakes (and wife Michelle) of Fresno, CA; and Jackson Benard of Abilene, TX; as well as great-grandchildren Emmett Schoettler of Madera, CA; Hudson, Parker, and Landon King of Madera, CA; Smith and Reese Mehrten of Temple, TX; and Bennett Beakes of Fresno, CA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She will be greatly missed \u2014 but only until we are reunited in Christ (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis William Chezick, a devoted family man and pillar of his community, passed away peacefully on Aug. 16, 2026, at his home in Arroyo Grande, California, after a long-term illness. Born on Oct. 6, 1940, Dennis lived a life defined by service, integrity, and an unwavering love for the people around him. He was surrounded in his final moments by his family and his beloved wife of nearly 65 years, Andrea Mary Chezick, whose partnership with him was the heart of his world and beloved dog Elliot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis is survived by his four daughters \u2014 Tamara, Stacie, Erin, Shannon and her husband David Valdivia \u2014 who were the pride of his life. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and four nieces, each of whom carry forward his warmth, humor, and deep sense of family. To Dennis, family was his greatest accomplishment, and he cherished every gathering, celebration, and moment spent together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A man of many passions, Dennis loved golf, deep sea fishing, Bass Lake, and any occasion that brought loved ones together. He had a well known sweet tooth and never passed up a good dessert shared among friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis attended St. Frances High School and later Cal Polytechnic State University, building the foundation for a remarkable career rooted in leadership and community involvement. For 50 years, he served the Central Valley as the Owner and Broker of Chezick Realty (1963-2013), earning respect for his professionalism and genuine care for the people he served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His dedication to community was unmatched. In 2005, Dennis received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Madera Chamber of Commerce, recognizing decades of service. He served as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Chair of the Board of Directors for the Madera Chamber of Commerce<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Member of the Madera Elk\u2019s Lodge<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Board member for Madera Mosquito Abatement<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Board member of the Madera Economic Development Commission<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Lifetime member of the Madera County Fair Board<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Board member for the Central California Women\u2019s Facility, Chowchilla<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Board member of the Bass Lake Homeowners Association<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Volunteer with the Bass Lake Volunteer Fire Department<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dennis also proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Leonard F. Mason, carrying with him the discipline, camaraderie, and patriotism that shaped his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to his caregivers, Robert and Naomi, for their compassion, dedication, and friendship over the past few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Entering an exhibit at the Fair is a long-loved tradition in Madera County \u2014 one that brings families, friends and neighbors together, creates a little friendly competition, showcases local talent and, of course, offers the chance to take home a blue ribbon and some serious bragging rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 Madera Fair is inviting community members of all ages and skill levels to enter this year\u2019s exhibitor contests, with online entries closing August 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From baking and painting to succulents and photography, arts and crafts, collections and live food competitions, there is a place for just about every talent and passion at the Madera Fair. This year\u2019s exhibits also include plenty of opportunities to celebrate the Fair\u2019s \u201cAll American Party\u201d theme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery year, we hear people walking through the exhibit halls saying, \u2018I can do that!\u2019\u201d said Madera Fair CEO Barbara Leach. \u201cWell, this is your year to shine and enter! Whether you\u2019re an experienced exhibitor or have never entered anything before, we want to see what our community can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exhibiting at the Fair is more than winning a ribbon. After more than two years of planning, coordination and community support, Chowchilla officially celebrated the grand opening of a new VA ATLAS Center designed to improve healthcare access for Veterans throughout Chowchilla and surrounding rural communities last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ATLAS Center is a collaboration between the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9896 and American Legion Post 148 and is located at the American Legion building in Chowchilla. The ribbon cutting was held August 13 to members of the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Manuel Inacio, Commander of VFW Post 9896 and a member of American Legion Post 148, the project represents much more than a new facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is more than a room, a computer, an internet connection and a screen,\u201d Inacio said. \u201cIt is access to healthcare. It says someone cares. It says their service has not been forgotten. It says they are seen, valued and respected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2-year journey<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea for the Chowchilla ATLAS Center began more than two years ago after Inacio visited the VA ATLAS Site in Los Banos. Seeing how the program could bring VA healthcare closer to Veterans in rural communities sparked a vision for creating a similar resource in Chowchilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The effort gained momentum after VA nurse Sadie Wilcox learned that local Veterans were seeking ways to connect with their VA healthcare providers without making the long drive to Fresno. Wilcox helped connect Inacio people to help, beginning an intensive year of planning and coordination that eventually brought the vision to reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans organizations and community members quickly stepped forward. VFW and American Legion members offered their support, while Veterans\u2019 spouses volunteered their time to help transform the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tanya Robles, spouse of VFW and American Legion member Paul Robles, spent four days painting a large American flag on the wall. A display decorated with Buddy Poppies honors Veterans\u2019 sacrifices, while a display of military service flags, provided by Vietnam Veteran Larry Bebee, represents the importance of every branch and every Veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing care closer to veterans<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For many local Veterans, receiving VA healthcare can require an hour-long drive each way to Fresno, and sometimes longer with traffic. For older Veterans, the trip can be physically difficult. Veterans on fixed incomes face transportation costs, working Veterans may need to take time off, and younger Veterans may need to arrange childcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ATLAS Center helps remove those barriers by providing a local, private space where Veterans can securely connect with VA healthcare providers through virtual appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An ATLAS attendant can assist Veterans with the technology and connection process, while the private setting allows Veterans to communicate with their healthcare providers with dignity and confidentiality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The center also provides employment opportunities through ATLAS attendant positions, allowing Veterans to continue serving and supporting their fellow Veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Inacio, the center represents the continued commitment of the community to those who served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSometimes, helping another Veteran becomes part of our own healing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After two years of turning an idea into reality, the message behind the new center is simple: Access. Dignity. Hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Madera County Sheriff\u2019s Office Narcotics Enforcement Team (MADNET) served a search warrant in the area of Oakhill Road and Avenue 20 as part of an ongoing weapons investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Detectives contacted an adult male seated in the driver\u2019s seat of a vehicle in the driveway, and detained him without incident on August 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the investigation, detectives located a loaded unserialized privately manufactured firearm inside a satchel on the passenger seat. The firearm was equipped with an auto sear, an illegal conversion device capable of converting a semiautomatic pistol into a fully automatic firearm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the search of the residence, detectives located several firearms classified under California law as assault weapons, along with privately manufactured firearms, firearm suppressors, and approximately 100 homemade and illegally purchased conversion devices for pistols and rifles. Detectives also located a 3D printer believed to have been used to privately manufacture firearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, detectives seized suspected cocaine, digital scales, and a large amount of cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two adult males were arrested and booked into the Madera County Jail on charges including: Possession of cocaine for sale; possession of an assault weapon; possession\/manufacture of an auto sear; possession\/manufacture of a firearm suppressor; and possession of a controlled substance while armed with a loaded firearm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ryan McWherter, Executive Director of Madera County Food Bank, is organizing an event for Saturday called \u201cMarch Against Drugs and Gangs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event is open to all who want to participate. The march will begin at 6 p.m. at McNally Park, 825 S. A Street in Madera, and will end at Courthouse Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe started this march in 2010,\u201d McWherter said. \u201cBut I got busy with the Food Bank, and it hasn\u2019t been done for a lot of years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said there is a growing need for awareness. So many young people are affected by drugs, and the community can come together and unite for a safer community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The end of the march, in Courthouse Park, will be worship, testimonies, prayer booths, face paintings, and haircuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participating in the event, besides McWherter, will be public officials \u2014 Supervisor Leticia Gonzales, Madera Mayor Cece Gallegos, and Madera Chief of Police Gino Chiaramonte.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McWherter is encouraging community members, families, youth, educators, and local leaders to join together to promote peace, hope, and a drug- and gang-free future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
